Boxler's Sensational Seventeens

Alsace is the crème de la crème when it comes to complex and aromatic white wines, and has been a favourite region of wine merchants the world over for many decades, including ourselves. For today’s offer, we would like to welcome you back to that sleepy little village tucked away deep inside the Vosges mountains, just west of Colmar: the ancient town, of Niedermorschwihr. Here, we will take a look at a small selection from the sensational seventeen vintage, from one of the world’s finest winemakers: I bet you can’t guess who.

We have extolled the virtues of Jean Boxler’s genius many times before. Indeed, Jean’s consistency over many decades has undoubtedly established him as one of the most respected winemakers in the region, if not the world. He is a true master at creating wines with unrivalled precision and outstanding natural balance, which perfectly capture the essence of their varieties and which brilliantly reflect the subtle complexities of their unique terroir, as well as the astounding aromatics synonymous with the region. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering love and understanding of his land, enables him to harness the rich array of soil types to produce incredibly rich, intensely structured and very long-lived wines. For us, they are the most beautifully balanced and tantalisingly expressive wines in the appellation, consistently achieving these heights year after year. His 2017s are sensational.

Like all vintages, 2017, was not without its challenges, with Alsace experiencing the worst spring frosts for 50 years, followed by a long summer heatwave and drought. As usual, Jean reacted and adapted swiftly to any difficulties posed, to ensure that his vines achieved their optimum potential, producing an exceptional array of wines. Ever-understated, Jean was nonetheless, clearly delighted with the quality, stating that all varieties performed well, possessing a superb concentration, combined with a great balance of acidity.

This mixed case contains one of Jeans most sought-after Grand Cru, the Riesling ‘Sommerberg’, together with, two amazing reserve wines, the Pinot Gris ‘Reserve’ and the ‘Gewurztraminer’ Reserve, which come from fabulous terroir and which are seen by many as mini–Grand Cru.

Jean strives to make wines of the highest calibre, with fine, delicate, voluminous texture and complexity and infinite length. I know I am preaching to the converted when I say that he succeeds, producing an endless stream of wines that are as delicious, as they are profound. Don’t miss out of the 2017 chapter of Domaine Albert Boxler’s remarkable story.
