Les Petits Rhônes

It’s not always just about the blockbusters, the ‘Grand Crus’, the regal and exalted terroirs. Are they important, of course, however nothing in this world is black and white, and that translates to the world of wine. We aren’t always longing for the most decadent, age worthy and complex cuvée. There are countless days when a simpler wine of pleasure ticks all of the boxes: a lovingly crafted easy drinker, with ample character and class, that we don’t have to contemplate, that we can just sit back and enjoy. We have also always believed that the person is just as important as the place in wine. There can be disappointing Chateauneuf du pape’s, for example, and yet simply divine Côtes du Rhônes. With todays mixed case pairing we would like to highlight a couple of ‘Les Petits Rhônes’, that are more than worth your time. These two ‘humble’ table wines from the hands of two of the finest winemakers in Chateauneuf du Pape, are delicious little gems. They evoke and exhibit many of the finer trademarks of these domaines top cuvées, whilst remaining uncomplicated wines of pleasure, to be enjoyed in this moment.

Gauntleys Mixed Wine Cases Les Petits Rhônes - 2 Bottle Pairing Option

A two-bottle pairing option containing the following wines:

2019 IGP Rive Droite, Domaine Clos du Mont Olivet

Firstly, we the 2019 IGP ‘Rive Droit’, a well-made little gem from the esteemed Sabon family of Clos du Mont Olivet. From the wonderful sandy and quartz rich soils of Saint Laurent des Arbes, simply a stone’s throw over the river from Chateauneuf, and just north of Lirac, this is a rich, gourmet, approachable and juicy blend of 40% Carignan, 35% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Merlot. The soil imparts a wonderful finesse and supple quality despite the wines reasonable size. The clean and ripe red fruits jump off the palate, accompanied by an assortment of Southern Rhône spices, elegant tannins and great balance! Cultivating the soils carefully and sustainably, Thierry’s aim for all of Mont Olivet’s wines, is to produce wine which captures all the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, whilst retaining an elegant balance. He has certainly succeeded here!

Plan Pegau, Domaine du Pegau

Our next wine is from the sister Domaine of the exalted and revered Domaine du Pegau. The Plan Pegau is produced from parcels outside of Chateauneuf and is an exotic mix of 30% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot, and the 20% balance a mix of old-vines Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Danlas, Alicante and Cabernet Sauvignon. Laurence Feraud wanted to create a cuvée that reflects the hallmark personality and style of Pégau, whilst also being an approachable and affordable VDF for everyday wine buyers. The result is rich, meaty red, which captures the essence of the Southern Rhône Valley, with layers of red and dark fruit character, soft supple tannins from the merlot, and complex spice notes from extended aging in small oak barrels. It offers a true and loud echo of the traditional Pegau style and profile, and is the “little brother” of the Domaine du Pegau Cuvée Réservée Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Enjoy with game, hearty stews, and grilled meats.
