Let's Go Alfresco
As we welcome the beginnings of the 2022 summer season in style with the Queens Platinum Jubilee Weekend, many of us will be hitting the streets and enjoying the celebrations outdoors. As the temperature continues to rise, and the days shine brighter for longer, escaping our little hobbit holes and venturing outside is becoming a more and more pleasurable experience with each passing day. When the persistent bitingly cold British breezes finally succumb to the reinvigorated warmth of the summer sun, it’s time to brush the cobwebs off of our outdoor furniture, and get the table set. We can finally eat outside again!
Whether it’s a sizzling bbq that you swear by, or whether you prefer a finer dining alfresco experience (or admit there’s plenty of room for both), the few months of the year where we are able to gather friends and comfortably eat outdoors together, are very special. To help ensure you are properly equipped to make the most of this sacred time of year, we have put together of few mixed case options for you to choose from.
Our ‘Best Bottles for the BBQ’ and ‘Fine Dining Alfresco’ mixed cases both contain two reds, two whites, one rosé and a sparkling wine, in order to provide you with a plethora of options to cater for a wide variety of tastebuds. The ‘Best Bottles for the BBQ’ is a fun selection of well-made easy drinkers. They are vibrant, clean, pure and refreshing, perfect for good bbq grub and a gabby good time with family and/ or friends. With the ‘Fine Dining Alfresco’ case, we have selected wines which are deeper, richer, more complex and more stylish. Wines that are best being sipped and savoured, not glugged, and that can be intentionally paired with a variety of different dishes.

VdF Liberty
A smaller cuvée from one of our top producers in Chateauneuf du Pape. This is no simple Vin de France, it comes mostly from a parcel of 65-year-old vines planted in a cooler, higher elevation parcel in the CDR. In addition, it includes some of his declassified Chateauneuf du Pape grapes, hence the Vin de France label and not Cotes du Rhone (Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the few appellations that cannot be declassified to Cotes du Rhone). Made from 55% Grenache, 18% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre and the rest Cinsault and Carignan, it tastes like a Chateauneuf du Pape with its juicy black raspberry, violets, peppery herbs and distinct minerality. This comparison is certainly still valid on the palate, as well and its medium to full-bodied, concentrated and structured. A 'mini' Chateauneuf.
Sancerre
Produced on the argilo/calcaire soils, this is a wonderful example of a classic Sancerre. Pure, crisp aromatic fruit and wet stone minerality on the nose. Wonderful intensity on the palate. Dry, but with good depth and real intensity again, lovely racy acidity and classic mineral expression of Sancerre, yet restrained and elegant.
Bandol Rosé
A blend of 50% Mourvedre, 40% Cinsault and 10% Grenache, this rosé really shows what great rose can be. The wonderfully floral nose is accompanied by luscious fresh orange and strawberry fruits, balanced with a subtle spiciness. The palate shows wonderful depth, focus and finesse, offering up a plethora of ripe fruits, such as peach, apricot, blood orange, cherries as well as honeysuckle. The balance here is impeccable with good concentration of fruit, plenty of brightening acidity and an abundance of gentle spices and Provencal character to add complexity and roundness to the overall picture. This is an incredible classy showing from Gros Nore. It’s pure, crisp and long, juicy and simply irresistible. There is something here for all comers, whether you identify as a regular rose drinker or not there is much to love and take away from this sumptuous offering from the humble Alain Pascal.
Cremant d'Alsace
A sumptuous blend of 50% Pinot Auxerrois, 30% Pinot Blanc and 20% Pinot Noir. The nose is enticing and deep, alluring you with ripe white peach, quince and delicious creamy notes. The palate is broad and rich, with pear, peach and yellow fruits, brioche, unctuous rounding acidity and a charmingly fine and persistent mousse. It is also wonderfully mineral and refined. A more affordable alternative to Champagne but just as distinguished. A pure delight!
