St Cosme's Charming Crozes
If you are a fan of Northern Rhône wines, today you are in for a treat with this little gem, from the fabled Chateau Saint Cosme and the fantastic 2019 vintage: their delicious Crozes-Hermitage.
As you will already know, Louis Barruol of St Cosme is a master of his craft, an intense and uncompromising winemaker, and a consistent source of exceptional wines from Gigondas and throughout the Rhone Valley. Since taking over the family estate in 1992, it has since become one of the flagship domaines for Gigondas throughout the world.
However, one would be remiss not to mention, and foolish not to experience, any of the countless other wonderful cuvées produced under Louis’ meticulously watchful eye.
Possibly finding that working within the appellation of a single village, to be somewhat limiting, over the years Louis has also established his own ‘negoce’ wines, developing close working relationships with growers throughout the Rhone Valley, taking full control of vineyard management, harvest and vinification, enabling him to explore and master different terroirs, to consistently produce excellent examples of each appellation. The result, is exquisite wines such as today’s Crozes Hermitage!
This wine is made from 100% Serine, an ancient variety of Syrah, grown in granite and clay-sandy soils and aged for 12 months in a combination of new and used oak, resulting in a complex and layered profile. On the nose, you'll detect notes of wild raspberry, blueberries, black pepper, incense and even a whiff of smoked bacon, classic of rustic Syrah from these parts. Its delightfully decadent palate is medium to full-bodied and shows excellent depth of fruit encased in ripe, supple tannins. The palate is dense and rich, whilst maintaining a wonderful vibrancy, singing with layers of blueberries, black cherries, black pepper and hints of black olives on a long-lasting and velvety finish. Enjoy this wine on its own or paired with grilled steak, lamb, or other hearty meats.
2019 was an exceptional vintage in the Northern Rhône, and Louis has taken full advantage. This cuvée is really coming into its own and starting to reveal all of its charms and is a top tier example from this appellation. If you are looking for a great red to enjoy over the coming months, don't miss your chance to experience the exquisite flavours and textures of the 2019 Crozes-Hermitage, from Chateau St Cosme. Yet another feather in the cap of one of the most accomplished and versatile winemakers in the world today.
To help spread the joy, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage is on at a special offer case price for one week only! It is available by the bottle or as a case of six via the link below.
