Woken From Their Slumbers
The life cycle of wine, the journey of any single bottle and how it evolves; is simultaneously one of the most fascinating and exciting aspects of this world, as well as often being one of its most perplexing, and every now and then, infuriating. Endeavouring to calculate the perfect moment to open that coveted bottle, kept in the cellar for some time, praying that you aren’t opening it too early, or too late, is a sensation all of us who are passionate about wine can relate to. Countless think pieces are written on the topic, trying to unlock the secret and crack wine’s elusive code, but the reality is there is no magic formula to knowing, with absolute certainty, the right time to open any bottle. Each wine's journey is its own, is unique, and that’s what makes it fun!
With this thought in mind, we have recently retasted the magnificent selection from Christian Chabirand, at Prieure la Chaume. One of the most unique wineries in the Loire, Christian crafts wine from the most southernly vineyards in the region, equidistant from the Loire and the Medoc. Due to this proximity, he chooses to cultivate predominantly Bordeaux grape varieties in these calcareous soils, resulting in wines that perfectly capture the power and richness of Bordeaux along with the slatey minerality and finesse of the Loire. Indeed, these wines are probably the closest we will get to working in Bordeaux!
The trio of wines from Christian’s portfolio that we have for you today have been on quite the Journey. Spectacular out of the gate when we originally purchased them, they then entered a deep sleep, not showing their true selves for a number of years, much to our chagrin. However, like butterflies from their cocoons, they have awoken from their slumber in spectacular fashion and truly seem to have reached their zenith: personifying the individuality, life and quality that we fell in love with when we first tasted these wonderfully unique wines from Prieure la Chaume.

Prieure La Chaume Woken From Their Slumbers - 3 Bottle Mixed Case
The following mixed case contains 1x each of the following wines:
2014 Bel Canto
2013 Prima Donna
2010 Orfeo
First up with this mixed case we have Christian’s lovely base red wine, the Bel Canto. Produced from 100% Merlot this is a vibrant, elegant and expressive wine bursting with crunchy red berries and cherries. There is good structure here and a refreshing salinity. This wine is truly hitting its expressive peak with wonderful length and balance. Following on, for the white Prima Donna, Christian took inspiration from one of France's other great appellations, opting for what he describes as, the most famous and successful blend for white wine in the world, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The result is spectacular, with characteristics reminiscent of an intense Champagne. Lovely depth and complexity, multi-dimensional on the palate, but with an uplifting balance of acidity, distinctive salinity and great length. Christians whole range is superb; however, it reaches its true culmination with his 'Orfeo' Cuvée. This is a truly extroadinary red which exhibits wonderful intensity and stylish complexity, offering aromas of ripe black berries, spice and very subtle hints of liquorice, but still with a restraint and finesse. It is made from the Domain's oldest vines and is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a smattering of Negrette for spice. You have the power, complexity and richness of those wonderful Bordeaux grapes, harmoniously matched with the minerality, acidity and finesse of his Loire terroir. It truly is a match made in heaven and this sumptuous cuvée really shines. Due to the age of this wine, there may be some sediment in the bottle, so we would recommend allowing it to stand for 24 hours to allow this to settle, before enjoying.
