2017 Elena de Mestres – Mestres

From one of the oldest sparkling wine producers in Spain, and one the most highly revered sparkling wine producers across the globe, this is one of the most beautiful and endearing examples of a rosé Cava that you are likely to come across! Since 1312 the family at Mestres have been perfecting their craft and producing Gran Reserva Cavas unlike anything you will have ever tasted, and their ‘Elena de Mestres’ Rosé is no different. The nose explodes with floral notes and gorgeous aromas of raspberry jam and ripe red fruits. On the palate, the primary flavours are accompanied by lovely savoury notes of pastries and cream from the wines long aging on lees, as well as lightly toasted and balsamic notes from the barrel. The palate delivers on everything that the nose promises and then some. It is complex, rich, and dry, with the sweetness and flavour coming simply from the wonderful fruit and the exceptional craftsmanship from the masters in the winery and in the vineyards at Mestres. The fine and persistent mousses combined with zesty acidity and minerality ensure that the wine never loses its freshness and moreishness. The deliciously ripe fruit, creamy sensibility and wonderful length ensure that you'll never want your glass to be empty. This remarkable Gran Reserva Cava has more than enough complexity and structure to pair perfectly with any type of meal and is delightful to drink all on its own as well.

NV Cuvée Rubis – Vilmart

During our time in the wine trade, we have not come across many (many being the generous word) Rosé Champagnes that have overly interested us. But in the more than capable hands of Laurent Champs, the Cuvee Rubis and Cuvée Emotion in particular, have completely inverted our scepticism. We have been lucky enough to work with, and be champions of, the incredible growers Champagnes from Laurent, at Vilmart, for over 30 years, and he has never missed a step. Producing world class Champagne year after year, and this expertly crafted rosé Champagne is no different. At 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay, the pure and ripe red fruit really shines with this cuvée. It is elegant and refined. The beautiful salmon pink dress is followed by luscious aromas and sensations of bright strawberries, cherries and raspberries on the nose and palate. There is ample freshness, a salivation-inducing mousse and a smidge of pink grapefruit on the back to add a little fresh twang to the proceedings. The balance is impeccable and the finish is pure and long.

2013 Cuvee Emotion – Vilmart

It would be hard to find a more perfectly named Cuvée for Valentine’s Day. Formerly called ‘Grand Cellier Rubis’, the ‘Cuvée Emotion’ is Laurent’s vintage Rosé Champagne and is the elder sibling to the Cuvée Rubis. Laurent raises the bar in absolutely every regard with this one. At 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay (compared with the Cuvée Rubis 90% PN) and coming from over 60-year-old vines, the Emotion is denser, richer and more complex. It completely charms you from the start, seducing you with its floral and unctuous red fruit nose and its ample, round and complex palate of strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry, vanilla and slight pomelo grip on the finish. The bouquet of fruit is wonderfully supported by subtle notes of almond, cinnamon and honey and even a gentle hint of woody spice. The length, as with all of Laurent’s wines, is simply from another realm, creamy, pure and pristine. All of the component parts are in absolute harmony with each other, with equal parts power and equal parts finesse, this wine is guaranteed to blow you away. It is out of this world. If anyone ever says that great Rosé Champagne does not exist…. Ahem…. Slowly push this bottle forward. If you are able to stretch the purse strings a little bit this Valentines, you will not regret experiencing the ‘Cuvée Emotion’ from Vilmart.
