2017 Pinot Gris ‘Reserve’ - £33.00

Jean’s Pinot Gris Reserve, is a sensational, luscious but earthy Pinot Gris from the granite soils around the village of Niedermorschwihr. It is produced from vines ranging from 15-65 years of age, from parcels around the Sommerberg and Brand Grand Crus. The palate is wonderfully juicy, singing with ripe apricot fruits and subtle notes of ginger, combined with a flinty minerality. It is seamless and delicious! Its 15 grams of residual sugar balance out the palate perfectly and the finish is delightfully long and pure. This is Jean’s second entry level Pinot Gris, before his wines from ‘Brand’ and ‘Sommerberg’, and the level of quality here is astounding and would comfortably contend with, or even eclipse, many growers’ Grand Cru. A great alternative to a red wine, to serve with roast pork or chicken and a perfect partner to a rich pate or cheese.

2017 Gewurztraminer ‘Reserve’ - £32.20

Boxlers generic Gewurztaminer ‘Reserve’ is from 40–65-year-old vines, taken from varying plots on his limestone dominant lieux-dits: Heimbourg and Pfoeller, just outside of Niedermorschwihr. The terroir from these plots tends to produce a slightly more elegant expression of the variety, compared with the bigger, broader, more intense and age-worthy expression that comes from the ‘Brand’ grand cru. This cuvée has a beautifully pure and elegant bouquet, offering clear aromas of rose, lychee, honeyed tropical fruits, sweet spices and Turkish Delight. Wonderfully pure and expressive on the palate, with delicious, ripe lychee styled fruit and subtle notes of ginger, spice and smoke. Whilst maintaining the typicity of a Gewurztraminer, with opulence, spice, ample richness and gentle smoke, the palate is seemingly not at all heavy. Even clocking in with 35 grams of residual sugar, it is never cloying, it is pure, vibrant and elegant, and again with a length that goes on for days, as do all of Jean’s stunning wines. Wonderful with Thai curry or Cantonese style cuisine, meat dishes accompanied by cream sauces and mushrooms, and perfectly partnered with strong cheese.

2017 Riesling ‘Grand Cru Sommerberg’ - £58.85

The “regular” Boxler Riesling Sommerberg originates in upper-elevation parcels just northeast of the village of Niedermorschwihr. Whilst tightly woven, secretive and dense in its infancy, it has truly blossomed with now 5 years of bottle age. It is pure and flinty on the piquant, spicy/herbal, stone fruity and floral nose. This is the pure expression of granite in Riesling! The palate is awesome. It is intense, textured and juicy, nicely concentrated and ripe, with a touch of sweetness but gorgeous finesse, vitality and piquancy. There is also great delineation and a mineral backbone to add levity. Stone fruits, some pineappley tropical notes and honeysuckle really sing on the palate, with a backing of spice to round out the picture. The finish is pure and long, with gentle salty notes, and it develops a gorgeous juiciness which seems to rise to crescendo, and leaves you with beautiful positive flavours, long after the glass is finished.
