2018 Calusari Pinot Noir – Viile Timisului
Our first stop brings us to Romania, to visit Englishman, Philip Cox, and his Romanian wife Elvira. They have dedicated their lives to transforming the long moribund, 700-hectare ancient estate, Cramele Recas, into a contemporary winemaking haven, to help drive Romanian winemaking forward. Their Pinot Noir is fantastic, especially considering the quality you are getting for the price! It has a light, soft and welcoming nose of autumn fruits. Soft smooth & spicy flavours throughout with generous red fruit flavours on a supple and mouth-watering palate. The finish is clean, elegant, and long. Pure, vibrant Pinot fruit, clean and elegant and such a complete contrast to the rustic reds that invaded the market from this part of the world in the past.
2012 Savigny Les Beaune 'Grand Liards' - Domaine Giboulot
We have always been enthralled by the many different cuvées of Savigny, beautifully portraying their individual expressions of terroir. Indeed, for us, Savigny les Beaune has always been to Burgundy, what St. Joseph is to the northern Rhone, an often-overlooked appellation, which is able to produce great wines at relatively reasonable prices. Jean-Michel Giboulot produces exceptionally fine wines, which also represent excellent value. The 2012 Grands Liards, is an absolute delight, with lovely fruit, elegant balance and showcases the exceptional quality/value that can be found in Savigny. The terroir here gives the wine a wonderful finesse. The profile sings with fresh blackberry and raspberry fruit with a subtle meaty character and super Savigny minerality. There is a serious structure here which is perfectly balanced by racy acidity. The finish is long and elegant.
2017 Pinot Noir – Domaine Albert Boxler
We all know that Boxler needs no introduction. His reputation precedes him, and his white wines are widely regarded amongst the finest on the planet. However, one would also be doing themselves a great disservice if they were to overlook Jean’s absolutely delicious Pinot Noir Cuvées. Hyperbole seems to follow Jean Boxler where ever he goes, however it would not be an exaggeration to say that his Pinots are also amongst the finest we have ever tasted from the appellation. His 2017 straight Pinot Noir is deliriously deep, juicy, wonderfully fresh, mineral, vibrant and above all elegant. The redcurrant, raspberries and strawberries found on the palate are astonishingly ripe, pure and lively. This is a persistent and generous wine, that has the perfect mix of ripe fruit, silky tannins and a fresh tension filled structure. The mineral grip is really what holds the whole package together, and it results in a long, deep and vibrant finish. Perfect for drinking alongside roasted white meats.
