For todays mixed case offering, we are delighted to be taking a brief foray back to our cherished second home: the Southern Rhône. An area that we continue to relish roaming and exploring, over 40 years later. Here we will share with you three delicious and excellent value Côtes du Rhônes from the charming 2021 vintage, from three of the top domaines in their respective Cru’s.
This three bottle mixed case contains 1x each of the following wines:
Grand Nicolet CDR 2021
Coming in at 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan, this is a knockout Côtes du Rhône that does everything right. Very appealing and great value! A lovely floral nose leads into a medium-full bodied palate that is silky and refined, immediately arresting you with its pure and ripe, classic Southern Rhône, black berry and cassis fruit. The clay and limestone soils impart good structure but also a vibrant acidity that keeps this cuvée fresh and approachable, but still with good weight and power under the bonnet. Perfect to be drunk now, or over the coming 2-3 years.
Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes – Mont Olivet - £19.65
This is a delicious and serious Côtes du Rhône, from rich sandy and quartz soils from the ‘Sainte Cardille’ Lieu-dit in Orange, just north of Chateauneuf. Made from 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mouvedre and produced from 40–70-year-old vines this wonderful little cuvée shows a refined depth and complexity which could rival many top Crus. It opens on the nose with a beautifully pure and fragrant bouquet of cherries and blackberries, accompanied by subtle notes of garrigue. The palate that follows is wonderfully intense and with rich raspberry and cherry fruit, alongside attractive notes of pepper and spice. However, it is not heavy at all, with lively harmony and balance. It is round and silky with real finesse, very fine tannins and great length.
Cotes du Rhone – Chateau St Cosme - £16.40
An incredibly rare 100% Syrah Côtes du Rhône, and what a treat it is! Louis first started producing this wine back in 1997, and it has since become an firm favourite of many of his clients, as well as ours! His idea was to make a Syrah-based Côtes du Rhône, unlike virtually all Côtes du Rhône on the market, which are generally made from Grenache, that was fruit-forward, rounded, dense and fresh. He unequivocally succeeded, and this is consistently up their amongst the finest CDR’s on the market today.
The Syrah from this vintage has really displayed its exceptional credentials with top quality, rich and deep fruit, magnificently intense colour and layered texture. There are mouth-watering flavours of blackcurrant, truffle, liquorice and wild raspberry on the palate, with a good backing of garrigue and sweet spice. It is a full-bodied wine with great acidity, polish and incredible refinement. The balance is beautifully harmonious and the structure and power present should allow this wine to develop for a long time to come, however it is ripe and juicy and delicious right now! Far from your typical CDR.
