Favourites for Autumn

As we have said before, hearty reds hit differently this time of year. During this transformational time, as the sun’s warmth diminishes, the days get progressively shorter and winter’s chill begins to cling to the world, there’s nothing quite like the warming embrace of a beautifully balanced, deep red wine. Whether a partner to a lavish feast and great company, a welcome respite snuggled up by a roaring fire or simply enjoyed of its own accord, these frosty autumn and winter evenings are slightly less frosty, with the right glass of wine. With this in mind, we bring you this week’s mixed case, a selection of exceptional value, hearty Southern Rhône reds from some of our favourite producers in the region. Bring some colour and warmth back into these grey, chilly Autumn afternoons with some affordable indulgences. This is our ‘Favourites for Autumn’ special offer mixed case.

Gauntleys Mixed Wine Cases Favourites for Autumn - 6 Bottle Special Offer Mixed Case

This special offer mixed case contains 2x each of the following wines:

Galets Rouge 2019 - Mourgues du Gres - £14.00 2017 Cotes du Rhone So Rhon! – Domaine Constant Duquesnoy - £13.35 2019 IGP Rive Droit – Clos du Mont Olivet – £14.80

First up we have the charming base red from one of the pioneers of organic viticulture, and most highly regarded domaines in the Costieres de Nîmes, the 2019 Galets Rouge from Chateau Mourgues du Gres. The terroir here is made up of large pudding stones called gres, very similar to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, retaining plenty of the suns warmth for the vines, resulting in a generous, gourmand and smooth red, chock full of black and red currants, with a long warm finish. Following on from that we move to the cooler, higher altitude vineyards of Vinsobres; where we visit the successful Belgium businessman/ winemaker Gerard Constant. After following his passion, and realising his dream of creating his own wine and owning his own vineyards, Gerard has gone on to help bolster the reputation of Vinsobres over the last few decades, crafting some of the finest wines in the region. His Côtes du Rhone ‘So Rhon’ is from vineyards at the bottom of his Vinsobres slopes, and is amongst the finest examples of CdR around. Beautifully pure, fragrant and fresh, this is a literal ‘punnet of fruit in a glass’, offering an abundance of vibrant crunchy bramble fruits and a seamless purity. It is truly delicious. We then finish strong with a gorgeous red IGP from the highly revered family of winemakers at Clos du Mont Olivet, who have been crafting sensational wines, based in and around Chateaunueuf du Pape since the beginning of the 20th century. They aim to produce wine which captures all the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, whilst retaining an elegant balance, and this philosophy filters down to their rich, gourmand and approachable 2019 ‘Rive Droite’. A juicy blend of 40% Carignan, 35% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Merlot, there are supple and ripe red fruits and gentle spice on the palate, combined with elegant tannins, good balance and structure. A well-made little gem!
