Aromatics for Autumn
We are incredibly excited to share with you a selection of the latest releases from our beloved Boxler, which are fresh off of the boat and have just now arrived in our bond!
We have eagerly exalted Jean Boxler countless times before. The Boxler name is synonymous with the crème de la crème of Alsace. He is a true master at creating wines with unrivalled precision and outstanding natural balance, which perfectly capture the essence of their varieties and which brilliantly reflect the subtle complexities of their unique terroir, as well as the astounding aromatics synonymous with the region. His wines never cease to astonish, dazzling you with their fine, delicate, voluminous texture, complexity and infinite length, meaning you dread the moment you reach the bottom of that glass. This makes every new shipment which arrives in our bond a special occasion: like Christmas morning, with us anxiously waiting like impatient children to open our presents! So, in this spirit, we have put together our ‘Aromatics for Autumn’ mixed case: a gift box of brand-new Boxler, for you to unpack and enjoy going into the latter half of the year. As the leaves begin to change and our eyes are treated to a gorgeous cacophony of colour, delight all of your senses and tantalise your taste buds with Boxlers rich array of aromatics and flavours.
In this mixed case we are showcasing the delicious 2020 expressions of two of Boxlers often unjustly overlooked single varietal cuvées: his Pinot Blanc and his Sylvaner. In addition to this we have his gorgeous new 2019 Pinot Gris ‘Florimont’. 2019 Pinot Gris ‘Florimont’ 2020 Pinot Blanc 2020 Sylvaner
2019 Pinot Gris ‘Florimont’
New for 2019 the Pinot Gris ‘Florimont’ is produced from a superbly sighted south-facing plot on the Florimont Grand Gru, with great exposition. It is remarkably ripe and juicy, whilst remaining refined and pure, with real depth and enticing spice and aromas of lime marmalade, sweet peaches, almondy notes and a wet stone minerality. The palate is well-structured with great intensity, with lovely concentration of the delicious, ripe fruits, all harmoniouslu balanced by a refreshing acidity. As with all of Boxler’s wines, there is a wonderful refinement and direction. With just 10 g/l residual sugar, this feels quite dry and beautifully balanced. The finish is clean and long, with the positive flavours staying with you long after the glass is empty.
2020 Pinot Blanc
This is a masterfully crafted Pinot Blanc. With Boxler you truly feel like you are getting amongst the truest expressions of each variety. Produced from the granitic soils from vineyard sites around Niedermorschwihr, this wine is really expressive with an aromatic bouquet that lifts straight out of the glass, with glorious ripe fruit and subtle notes of asparagus. The palate is chock full of beautiful stone fruit such as nectarines and peaches, alongside mouth-watering notes of honeysuckle. As always with Boxler, the fruit is exotic and ripe, but never loud and in your face, the palate is supple, refined and glorious. The superb intensity and complexity is all balanced by refined acidity and attractive minerality. Once again, the finish is wonderfully clean and long. Delicious.
2020 Sylvaner
Jean is an accomplished ambassador for this often unjustly overshadowed variety! Sourced from 50-year-old vines from his Grand Cru granitic soils, this Syvlaner has a fresh, enticing, aromatic and delicately spicy bouquet. The palate is focused and pure with mouthwatering flavours of green apple, nectarine, quince, and a wet stone like minerality. There is a seductive and vibrant intensity on the palate, with great depth of juicy fruit, delicate spice and zesty acidity. This is a vibrant, refreshing and elegant wine, with a surprising, but welcome richness and density of fruit from a Syvlaner. The acidity helps lift and extend the gorgeous green apple and stone fruit nuances on the clean, light and long finish!
