Roccheviberti's Breathtaking Barolos

Many years have passed now since we fortuitously stumbled upon the fabulously pure wines of Claudio Viberti, at a specialist Italian wine tasting. They were being shown alongside many of the Piedmont region's longstanding elite, and for us, they unequivocally stole the show. A visit to Claudio’s estate followed shortly after, we knew we absolutely had to represent his wines and we haven’t looked back since.

The Viberti family have been hand crafting exquisite Barolo’s for generations, and could be said to have been one of the region’s best kept secrets for a while. However, under the calm and assured captaincy of current owner and guiding hand Claudio Viberti, the last two decades have seen a ‘blossoming’, as this winery’s reputation has finally gained the international recognition it deserves. With a mere 4.5 hectares of vines nestled around the small commune of Castiglione Falleto, the production at Roccheviberti is small but highly refined and specialised. Claudio’s wines are now widely regarded amongst the region's finest, and today it is our great pleasure to able showcase his full range of breath-taking Barolo’s, including two of his latest releases from the 2018 vintage. For us, the wines of Claudio Viberti are peerless and beautifully crafted, and his Barolo’s are easily amongst the finest in the region. If you love Italian wine, the wines from the Piedmont region; or even just love deep rich red wines and have never experienced one of Claudio’s Barolo’s, make sure to right this wrong as soon as possible. You won’t be disappointed!

The following selection of wine in our opinion is peerless and beautifully crafted. They combine purity of fruit and expression of terroir, with wonderful life, focus and finesse. Firstly, we have our ‘Roccheviberti’s Breath-Taking Barolo’s’ mixed case showcasing Claudio’s full range of stunning Barolo’s from his different vineyard sites. Secondly, we have a case of his 2018 generic Barolo the ‘Vecchie Viti’ and finally we have a case available of the pièce de resistance of his range, the world class 2018 ‘Roche de Castiglione’. As always, all of the wines in the mixed case are also available as individual bottles via the links in their names. Enjoy them any time of the year and as an accompaniment to any occasion, we are sure you will be as floored as we were, and anticipating the next glass!

‘Roccheviberti’s Breath-taking Barolos’ Special Offer Mixed Case

With this mixed case we aim to showcase Roccheviberti’s full range of exquisite Barolo’s. Stylistically Claudio’s wines strive for purity, elegance and rich perfumed bouquets to accompany the complex terroir and varietal flavours. This is in contrast to some of the wines from around Barolo that we feel can rely on an over indulgence of oak, which can sometimes render the wines heavy, cloying and almost undrinkable for a number of years after bottling. Stylistically Claudio’s wines strive for purity, elegance and rich fragrant bouquets to accompany the complex terroir and varietal flavours. Enjoy!

The following mixed case is available as a three or six-bottle option, containing either 1x or 2x each of the following wines:

2018 Barolo ‘Vecchie Viti’- £44.90 Per Bottle

2018 Barolo ‘Vecchie Viti’

The ‘Vecchie Viti’ is Claudio’s generic Barolo taken from a range of vines throughout his Barolo vineyards. The grapes for 2018 release are mainly taken from Claudio’s incredible ‘Bricco Boschis’ vineyard site. Compared to Rocche di Castiglione, the soil here is much richer in clay, resulting in Barolos with more intense color, bigger structure and pronounced tannins, all of which contributes to the wine’s longevity. This wine has a dark and inetnese garnet colour in the glass, and the nose engulfs with scents of raspberries, cherries, liquorice, spice, nutmeg and a slight earthiness. The palate is incredibly deep, rich and full of fruit and character, whilst still maintaining a delicate nature and silky tannins. The balance and purity as with all of Claudio’s wines really stands out, as well as the long and vibrant finish. This is a big wine that will age wonderfully for many years to come, but that can be enjoyed now if given the time to open.

2018 Barolo ‘Rocche di Castiglione’

Ahhhh, the pièce de résistance of Claudio’s range! Grown on the ‘Roche de Castiglione’, one of the smallest and most renowned vineyards in the entire Barolo region. With 40-year-old vines, a 350m elevation and consisting of a number of smaller vineyard terraces stretching across a very steep hill, the wines produced here are simply astonishing. The limestone and sandy soils result in a softer and more elegant Barolo than what is custom, and that is no bad thing. A lush nose of perfumed violets and rose petals backed by some spice and leathery notes. Incredibly deep, rich and full of fruit and character on the palate, whilst maintaining a real delicate nature. The tannin here is fine and the finish is long and pure. It has been aged in large French oak barrels for 2-3 years, and a further year in bottle, this is true craftsmanship! It will age and evolve wonderfully over the coming 5-10 years.
