Taste the Portuguese Sun

Today's mixed case aims to bring levity and warmth to October's damp and dismal start, with support from our partners in Palmela. As the dull grey skies return and days shorten, a beautifully balanced, pure red wine can offer comfort. Whether paired with a delightful meal, enjoyed in good company, or savoured alone, the right wine can brighten any day. This sumptuous mixed case from Venancio da Costa Lima invites you to indulge in the fruit of the Portuguese sun to help lift your spirits.

Portugal has become a sanctuary for wine lovers seeking exceptional quality at reasonable prices, and the ancient house of Costa Lima stands out as a revered name. The cuvées in this mixed case are crafted from the indigenous Castelão grape, offering individuality, balance, and remarkable value. In the past, many Castelão examples from Portugal were known for being tight, tannic, and rustic. However, these selections from Venancio Costa Lima exude personality, with pure fruit, layered depth, subtle spice, and harmonious balance.

Brighten your October with some Portuguese sunshine from our prized partners in Palmela!

Venancio de Costa Lima The Refined Reds of Costa Lima - Six-Bottle Mixed Case

This is a six-bottle mixed case containing 2x each of the following wines from Venancio da Costa Lima:

2018 Palmela 4a Geracao - £13.85 2018 Palmela Red Reserva - £18.80
2019 Foral de Palmela – 25.20

2018 Palemla ‘4a Geracao’

Produced to celebrate the experience passed down through the four generations of the family. Here, carefully selected Castelao grapes are blended with their best Syrah grapes and aged six months in French oak. Deep, dark cherry in colour, with a wonderfully expressive bouquet, of ripe plum and damson fruits and subtle notes of cedar. Seriously structured, but very harmonious with the same tantalizing, fruit characteristics coming through on the palate. An attractive rusticity here. This is not a squeaky clean, technically made wine, but a wine with real charm and personality.

2018 Palmela Red Reserva

Created from the Castelão variety, this is a wonderful expression if you are wanting a real reflection of this variety and its potential. With an intense garnet colour in the glass, from some french oak aging, this is a full-bodied and complex wine. The palate is rich, dense and chock full of ripe black currant and berry fruits, jams and an array of sweet spices, as well as gentle peppery and earthy notes. Despite being full-bodied, it is wonderfully well balanced, with great delineation and clarity and a blissfully long finish. Delicious. Drink now through the next 8-10 years. The ideal accompaniment for red meat dishes, strong cheeses, and game.

2019 Foral de Palmela

Produced from a single vineyard, with a total production of 200 cases, this is stunning! Produced from 100% Castelao and matured 12 months in French oak and 12 months in bottle. Deep garnet in the glass, with a wonderfully fragrant bouquet of ripe blackberry and loganberry fruit with more exotic spicy notes. The palate is dense, complex and structured, whilst at the same time remaining silky and refined, with gorgeous notes of pure blackberries and plums shining through alongside the sweet vanilla, spice and toasty notes. The balance is harmonious and the finish is incredibly long. This is a truly world class red wine, and incredible value for what is in the glass too! If you were inclined to pair it with something it would absolutely sing alongside lamb or game and richly flavoured vegetarian dishes, but it is truly wonderful experienced on its own as well.
