The Art of Nebbiolo

Continuing from last week, we are embracing the comfort of home and celebrating remarkable Italian wine. Let's face it, with the British weather as it is, who wouldn't want a taste of Italy right now? However, rather than introducing a new favourite, we're honouring a selection of exceptional reds from one of our most beloved producers: the unparalleled Nebbiolos of Claudio Viberti!

As you know, Claudio is widely considered among the region's best producers, and it is always our pleasure to showcase his breathtaking wines. Today's 2018 Barolo ‘Rocche di Castiglione’ and the remarkable 2020 Nebbiolo embody purity, elegance, and rich aromatic bouquets that complement their complex terroir and varietal flavours.

Claudio’s style contrasts with many Barolo producers that rely too heavily on oak, often resulting in wines that are heavy, cloying, and almost undrinkable for years after bottling. Claudio's wines masterfully combine the density, depth and purity of fruit with remarkable vibrancy, focus, and finesse. They evolve gracefully over decades, yet remain exceptionally lively and approachable in their youth.

If you love Italian wine, the wines from the Piedmont region; or even just love deep rich red wines and have never experienced one of Claudio’s Nebbiolos, make sure to right this wrong as soon as possible. You won’t be disappointed! And If you know his wines well, you will need no convincing from us. Allow them to accompany you and brighten up your dreary October.

Azienda Agricola Roccheviberti The Art of Nebbiolo - Six-Bottle Mixed Case

This is a six-bottle mixed case containing 3x each of the following wines from Roccheviberti:

2020 Nebbiolo - £31.60
2018 Barolo ‘Rocche di Castiglione’- £59.10 Per Bottle

2020 Nebbiolo Claudio's 2020 Nebbiolo is absolutely stunning and rivals the quality of many domaine's top Barolos. This is a softer and more elegant expression of Nebbiolo than is often found in the region, and this is no bad thing.

From limestone and clay-rich soils at over 350m in elevation, there is a delightful freshness and aromatic purity to the fruit here, which complements the power under the bonnet. It has been aged in old french oak barrels for 18 months followed by further 6 months ageing in bottle.

It is Ruby red in the glass, with a lush nose of perfumed violets, rose petals, red fruits, herbaceous hints and a welcome backing of spice. The palate is incredibly deep, rich and full of fruit and character, whilst always maintaining a really delicate nature. The tannins here are fine and the finish is long and pure, this is true craftsmanship. It will age and evolve wonderfully over the coming 5 years. A perfect accompaniment for a variety of rich cheeses and cold meat platters.

2018 Barolo ‘Rocche di Castiglione’

Ahhhh, the pièce de résistance of Claudio’s range! Grown on the ‘Roche de Castiglione’, one of the smallest and most renowned vineyards in the entire Barolo region.

With 40-year-old vines, a 350m elevation and consisting of a number of smaller vineyard terraces stretching across a very steep hill, the wines produced here are simply astonishing. The limestone and sandy soils result in a softer and more elegant Barolo than what is custom, and that is no bad thing.

A lush nose of perfumed violets and rose petals backed by some spice and leathery notes. Incredibly deep, rich and full of fruit and character on the palate, whilst maintaining a real delicate nature. The tannin here is fine and the finish is long and pure. It has been aged in large French oak barrels for 2-3 years, and a further year in bottle, this is true craftsmanship! It will age and evolve wonderfully over the coming 5-10 years.
