2015 VDN Rasteau ‘Grenat’

Made from over 80-year-old Grenache vines, some of the oldest in Rasteau, this makes for a delicious and refined dessert wine. Deep ruby in the glass this cuvée sings on the nose with sweet and baked ripe and pure blackberries, blackcurrants and raspberries. There is an attractive tingle of spice that is hinted at on the nose but that comes through wonderfully on the palate. The alcohol and sweetness never becomes heavy or cloying, it is pure, harmoniously balanced and vibrant. Incredibly appealing, and like all of Jean-Pierre’s range, amazing value!

2021 Côtes du Rhône

Coming in at 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan, this is a knockout Côtes du Rhône that does everything right. Very appealing and great value! A lovely floral nose leads into a medium-full bodied palate that is silky and refined, immediately arresting you with its pure and ripe, classic Southern Rhône, black berry and cassis fruit. The clay and limestone soils impart good structure but also a vibrant acidity that keeps this cuvée fresh and approachable, but still with good weight and power under the bonnet. Perfect to be drunk now, or over the coming 2-3 years.

2021 Côtes du Rhône ‘Le Pourquoi Pas’

Jean Pierre’s ‘Le Pourquoi Pas’ is a natural Côtes du Rhône wine, made with zero sulphur. The nose really explodes from the glass here, and there is a pronounced life, vibrancy and energy to the fruit. Although similar in the fruit profile to the regular Côtes du Rhône, there are a few more forward notes of raspberries and morello cherries to go alongside the black fruits. On the back cassis, and some gentle spicy notes come through as well as a delightful twang of white pepper. Lively, pure, deep and with a little more life, concentration and complexity than the regular Côtes du Rhône. This is delicious.

2021 Rasteau ‘Terres des Bertrand’

This breath-taking Rasteau from Jean-Pierre has got to be up there as one of the bargains of the Southern Rhône. The quality of juice in the bottle for the price is quite remarkable. This cuvée comes from a higher elevation than most of his other cuvées, at nearly 1000ft. The cooler temperatures mixed with the clay and limestone soils result in a pleasantly perfumed, pure and elegant style of Rasteau. Ripe and concentrated black raspberries, plums and liquorice shine through on the palate, supported by a gentle backing of sweet red fruits and spice, Provençal garrigue as well as leathery and tobacco notes to round out proceedings. This is full bodied and well structured; however, you never feel the size. There is a real finesse here, with a harmonious balance between the silky tannins, alcohol, fruit and a subtle minerality. The finish is long and refined. Excellent value, great quality, drinking now but will also age nicely over the coming decade.
