Azienda Agricola Grillo Iole

The charming 16th Century Manor House, of Vini Grillo Iole, is situated right on the border with Slovenia, in the sleepy village of Albana di Prepotto. It is home today to Anna Muzzonlini, together with her son Mattia and daughter Julia. Inspired by his passion for great wine, Anna's father Sergio, a Doctor by profession, first started producing wine here in the 1970s. His original desire was simply to share a great glass of genuine Prepotto wine, with family and friends. As time passed, however, his production grew and he began selling wine on a commercial basis. Having originally embarked on a career in biology, Anna made the decision to leave behind her life in a laboratory, for a life amidst the vineyards, returning home to join her father at the estate in 1999.

Sadly, Anna was not able to enjoy much time working alongside her father, before she had to step into his role, but she confidently took the reins and continued the journey, that he had begun, with the same dedication and passion. Anna immediately embarked on a quest for quality. Her hard work began in the vineyards, eliminating the use of any chemical herbicides and avoiding the use of any further treatments, unless absolutely necessary, in limited doses. All her work is carried out with the utmost care and respect for the vineyards and environment. Whilst she was proud of the estate her father had created and applauded the work that he had begun, she did not feel that he had always planted the best varietals for the terroir and set about pulling up Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Malvasia to replace with native varieties such as the Ribolla Gialla and the beloved, Shioppettino di Prepotto – the variety that she believes represent their true future. Unlike in her father's time, when the cellar was run by employees, today Anna manages the whole 9 ha estate, with the help of her son Mattia. Their love and devotion to their work clearly shine through in the wonderful wine they produce. From the location of their meticulously tended, steeply terraced vineyards, nestling in the forests that surround them, to the ambiance of the old cellars and the unforced, seamless balance of the wines they produce, there is undoubtedly, an irresistible charm here.
