Bodegas Callia

Bodegas Callia is situated in the San Juan wine region of Argentina which is made up of five separate valleys, Tullum, Ullum, Zonda, Pedernal and Calingasta. The Bodega itself comprises three separate estates, two of which are situated in the Tullum Valley where the winery is situated and the third in the Pedernal.

The San Juan region is most often associated with bulk wine production but the Callia team proclaim that this is simply because people did not realize the potential the region offered and never tried to produce anything of quality. However, with over thirty years experience of viticulture in Argentina, Rodolfo Ernesto Perinetti, who is now Callia’s agronomist, recognised that the micro-climate, terroir and low humidity of the region was perfect for the production of shiraz. Indeed the conditions here are very similar to Australia’s leading shiraz producing regions.

Like all Argentine estates, Callia is not small with hundreds of hectares under vine. However, the approach to viticulture is very hands on, with a meticulous strive for quality. Perinetti realizes that climate and terroir alone are not enough to produce great wine, but that attentive vineyard practices are essential. He is quoted as saying, ‘When you farm with respect, you can make quality wine’. His aim is to produce world class shiraz and he is using every effort to achieve his goal.

Much of the vineyard work is done by hand and great importance is placed on finding the best training method for the variety to ensure the vines receive good exposure to the sun from all directions. The grapes are harvested at the optimum physiological ripeness. Vinification is carried out it the Bodega’s superbly equipped and fully temperature controlled winery, which is built with the world’s most advanced techniques for earthquake resistance.

The Bodega produces four different quality levels, three of which are currently available from UK stock. Firstly the Callia Alta which are attractive fruit-driven red and white wines for immediate appeal. These include the Alta Torrontes/Chardonnay, Alta Shiraz/Malbec and the Alta Shiraz. Secondly, there is the Callia Magna Shiraz, made from premium quality vines and aged 6-8 months in French and American oak barrels with a further 3 months maturation in bottle. Finally we have the Grand Callia, which is only produced in exceptional harvests. Largely based on the best Shiraz from the Pedernal Valley, blended with Malbec, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. The exact blend varies according to the harvest but the wine is aged in new French and American oak barrels for 18 months and then given a further six months at least in bottle prior to release.
