Carlos Lucas Vinhos
Carlos Lucas has been working in the Portguese wine trade for almost 40 years, becoming one of the most highly respected producers and oenologists in the country. He was the co-founder of Dão Sul, back in 1990, and over 20 years helped transform it, into one of the most successful wine companies in Portugal. However, Carlos is first and foremost a farmer, and dreamt of returning to the basics and crafting wine on a smaller, more intimate scale. Wanting to produce wines which told a story, which had identity, soul and that show his dedication and passion for local Portuguese grape varieties. Because of this, in 2011, Carlos founded his own company ‘Magnum Wines’, and built a contemporary new winery overlooking his idyllic 6 hectare Ribeiro Santo estate. The poor granitic and schist soils, are perfect for indigenous varieites Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Alfrocheiro and help to produce incredibly perfumed and elegant wines. The Cota 700, receives no oak treatment, with Carlos opting to produce a wine which is refined and fresh. Bright red, almost violet in the glass, the Cota erupts with pure black mulberry, raison and blackberry fruits on the nose with a light nuance of pine needles and gentle smokiness. The wine is elegant, fresh and lively on the palate, with a pleasant acidity, followed by a touch of sweetness of the finish. It will pair wonderfully with a variety of Portuguese style dishes, such as, duck rice, oven-baked cod, cured sausages, grilled chicken and pasta.
