Domaine de l'Echevin
Domaine de l’Echevin, situated in the village of St. Maurice, is one of two properties owned and run by Francois and his son, Adrien Fabre. It is named after their ancestor, Guillaume de Rouville, the mayor, “Echevin”, of Lyon in 1586, who owned properties in the Rhone Valley. The other estate the Fabres own today, is Domaine la Florane, in the village of Visan.
Today, Domaine de l'Echevin comprises 14.5 hectares of vines and 2 hectares of woodland. It is situated on a plateau overlooking the village of St. Maurice. The average age of the vines here is 40 years and the vineyards are at an altitude of 350 metres, covered with round pebbles. The old Grenache vines are planted in the highest part of the vineyards, which are south facing. The Syrah is planted on a north facing site which is surrounded by woodlands and with a soil which allows the roots to descend deeply. The syrah here develops good acidity with the help of the fresh microclimate. In the middle part of the vineyards where it is protected from the mistral, the Cinsault is grown. Finally on the north facing slopes below the domaine and facing the village, the white varieties can be found, Viognier, Grenache Blance, Marsanne and Roussanne.
There is an extraordinary sense here, as we toured the vineyards of both domaines with Adrien, of immense pride and know-how. The vineyards are worked traditionally with respect and consideration of the environment and their wine are vinified in the one, purpose built winery, constructed in 2001. Equipped with all the latest mod cons and efficiency saving gadgets which enable total control and precision of every aspect of the winemaking process. Further, gravity is the only tool used here to move the wine around.
Adrien is a young and dynamic vigneron, who obviously knows and fully understand what is needed to be done to create great wines. These wines are full of character, with a lovely purity of fruit combined with a good sense of terroir, possessing power, concentration and complexity, but also immense finesse.
