La Guardiense
In 1960, thirty-three far-sighted winemakers decided to join forces and form La Guardiense. It is a collaborative enterprise, focused on creating high quality, and affordable wines, solely with native grape varieties to help boost the global awareness and reputation of Italy’s central Campania region. This area is part of Sannio, a sub region in the north of Campania and the winemakers knew that local indigenous varieties such as Falanghina, Fiano, Greco and Aglianico were perfectly suited to the region’s volcanic soils. Today, membership has grown to nearly 1,000 farmers and winemakers, but still only managing a total of about 1,500 hectares, meaning that the fruit comes from a large selection of very small family owned vineyards. The company’s winery boasts much modern technology, including a fantastic and unique solar power system. Since 2006, the winery has undergone a revolution in quality and innovation, thanks to the company’s decision to employ Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most famous and well-respected oenologists. His influence has added an extra level to the quality of the wines produced here.
