Martin Nigl

The domaine is situated above the Krems valley, in the village of Priel near Senftenberg. The 25 hectares which make up the estate, are located in several of the best single sites of the Kremstal. His two most important vineyards in the Krems valley are Piri for Riesling and Gruner Veltliner and Hochacker for Riesling. These are two of the top crus of Senftenberg and are extremely steep with a terroir of primary rock. The remaining vineyards are in the town of Krems.

The Urgesteinsriede Kremsleiten is particularly good for Riesling. 40% of the total plantings are Riesling and 40% Gruner Veltliner, the remaining 20% comprise Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay and Zweigelt. The domaine was founded by Martin’s parents in 1986 and is still run as a family concern. Martin is responsible for the wine making and his brother Josef the vineyard management. The Nigl’s have taken great care to plant each variety in the locations where the micro-climate and terroir best suits them. Josef’s dedicated management in the vineyards and Martin’s flare and skill in the winery combine to produce some of the Kremstal’s most scintillating wines. Nigl’s finest Riesling and Gruner Veltliners are sold under the label “Privat”. The grapes for these wines are grown on old vineyards in the Senftenberger Piri. The rootstocks here are over 35 years of age grown on primary rock soils, producing minute yields. Both the Gruner Veltliner and Riesling Privat are incredibly concentrated with superb complexity and mineral characteristics - and an amazing ability to age.
