Rudi Pichler

Domaine Pichler is situated in Wosendorf, within the Wachau. The Wachau has its own controlling body the “Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus” and the wines are classified into three categories, Steinfeder, meaning light and racy, Federspiel, meaning elegant and medium bodied and the Smaragd which are ripe and full bodied. The Smaragd wines may sometimes have an influence of botrytis.

Rudi’s father became so frustrated with the 1996 vintage, that Rudi stepped in and finished the vinification for him. He took over the running of the domaine the following year. He is quick to point out that he has not formally studied his craft – his degree was in economics not wine! Neither was he groomed for a career in the industry by working in the cellar alongside his father. For me this makes his swift success and his obvious understanding and affinity with his vineyards even more amazing.

Owning just 8 hectares, he produces an astonishing selection of wines including several different cuvees of Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, plus a variety of wines from the Pinot Blanc and Roter Veltliner. For us however, the real excitement is once again the Riesling and G V’s. The purity of expression he achieves in both varieties and the personality of individual terroirs is breathtaking.
