St Tamas

Based in Tokaji, in the village of Mád (long known for providing some of the key vineyards within this historic region), is István Szepsy, of St Tamás. Istvàn is a true maverick of the area, and is on a mission to show the world that Tokaji, can make more than just great sweet wine. He believes that this area, should be seen as a world class producer of all the different styles of wine, and he won't stop until he achieves it. He cultivates the classic native grape varieties: Furmint, Hárslevelü and Sarga Muskotály, planted in volcanic soils of yellow and red clay. This land, formed by millions of years of volcanic eruptions, gives the vines access to a wide variety of mineral rich sub soils, and results in unique and structured wines. The dry Furmint that István produces, has been compared as, somewhere between Loire Chenin and Chablis in style. This is a refreshing white wine, expressing both the varietal character of the Furmint variety and the typical minerality of the vineyards of Mád village. It is well structured, textured and balanced, with an unctuous and elegant blend of apricot, zesty lemon and peaches on the palate, with a warming, ginger spice and a delightful honeyed sweetness. Just off dry in style with mouthwatering acidity and minerality.
