Weinrieder
Comprised of just 20 hectares of vines and buried deep in the heart of Austria’s largest wine growing region, Weinviertel, wine maker Friedrich Rieder and his family, go about hand crafting some of the finest white wines around. Situated high in the far north-east corner of the country, there is immense focus at Weinrieder on the entire growing cycle and really pushing the extremes in terms of harvest, while preserving the quality of the fruit. The wines embody an incredible fidelity in terms of showing vintage instead of relying on adjustments or trends. The predominately loess and loam soils help to impart minerality to offset and compliment the characteristic “pepper” spiciness found throughout the region. You will find no fancy technology here, the equipment in the cellar is relatively simple and straightforward, just well-manicured stainless-steel tanks for long cool fermentations. Friedrich feels that, as so often in cool climate winemaking, preparation and the timing and careful execution of the harvest are his most important tools. Much like Jean Boxler, Weinrieder seem to achieve an effortless, natural balance, offering an incredible range of expression and complexity, which has made them so highly sought after by the world’s leading sommeliers. With wonderfully balanced and peppery Gruner Veltliners, racy full flavoured but amazingly refined Rieslings, fine chardonnay, rich, mineral Weissburgunder and a sumptuous range of varied, sweet wines the family at Weinrieder has truly earned their stellar reputation as white wine specialists.
