Discover Clos Venturi

There is more to Corsica than meets the eye. Yes, it may be a notably beautiful, sun-kissed holiday destination, however, this rugged and dramatic little isle is also home to some of the Mediterranean’s most unjustly overlooked wines. Corsica’s mountainous spine, which carves a line down through its centre whilst rising high into the azure Mediterranean sky, creates a fascinatingly diverse climate and range of sub soils for such a small island. All of this, combined with it remaining a French territory, whilst concurrently sharing most of its winemaking traditions and grape varieties with Italy, makes it one of the most unique and interesting winemaking regions around. Today, we are pleased to be transporting you to this rugged and scenic landscape, to take a look at a delightful red and white duo, from one of the regions most established and best proprietors: Clos Venturi.

Based in Piedigriggio, in Central Corsica, Clos Venturi sits at the very edge of the winemaking zone: over 300 meters up, in the foothills of the islands great 2000m peaks. The ancient estate and vineyards were established in 1901 under Domaine Vico, however Jean-Marc Venturi’s family took over the reins of this historic domaine in 1987, and quickly went about modernising the estate with the aim of truly fulfilling the potential of the spectacular terroir. One of their overarching philosophies is ‘respect for the vine’, and so in order to truly extract the defining qualities of the terroir sustainably the domaine has been in conversion to organic viticulture since 2017, and although not yet being certified, is 100% run according to biodynamic principles. Their position at the foot of some of the region’s highest peaks, gives them access to incredibly varied schist, sand and volcanic subsoils, and huge temperature differentials between night and day. This unique positioning coupled with biodynamic vineyard practices and some careful winemaking result in astonishingly good wine, made from indigenous varieties. The wines are harmonious, showcasing the distinct nuances of the Corsican landscape whilst combining incredible purity of fruit, freshness and tension with a real southern, Mediterranean maturity.

Today we are showcasing the beautiful ‘1769’ red and white cuvées from Clos Venturi. Made from Corsican grape varieties these wines have a lot to offer, with gorgeously pure aromatics and exotic and rich palates that remain elegant, fresh and harmoniously balanced. Contains 1x each of the following wines from Clos Venturi:

2017 Clos Venturi ’1769’ White 2016 Clos Venturi ‘1769’ Red

2017 Clos Venturi White ‘1769’

Made from 100% Vermentinu, this has a pale straw colour with slight green reflections. The nose is aromatic and clean, with a cacophony of gorgeous fruits spilling from the glass: such as peaches, pears and lemons. The palate then fulfils this promise, with a medley of juicy and ripe tropical fruit. White and citrus fruit evolves into ripe tangerines and peaches in the mouth, with a backing of pleasingly tart grapefruit and a gentle sea salty note rounding out the finish. This could easily be overbearing and too much, however with mouth-watering acidity and a pleasant oceanic minerality the balance is perfect, resulting in an elegant and pure wine. The notes from the palate continue throughout the long and lingering finish. This is perfect to be drunk on its own, but would also go well with seafood, grilled fish with vegetables or in a creamy sauce, poultry, soup or pasta.

2016 Clos Venturi Red ‘1769’

Made from 80% Niellucciu, 10% Syrah and 10% Sciaccarellu, this has a deep violet appearance in the glass. The nose is rich and spicy, with notes of pure red and black berry fruits layered over hints of chocolate, brown spice, green pepper and a gentle toasty note. The palate is robust, yet elegant, with silky tannins and wonderful direction and density. Crunchy and juicy black cherries and berries sing through with a distinct note of coffee, sweet spice on the finish and a seductive herbal note. The balance is fantastic here, with a warming southern character balanced with a distinct freshness from its situation and vineyards. This would perfectly pair with a variety of Mediterranean dishes, salmon in sauce, steak or game.
