Mestres Month!

We are thrilled to announce that the stunning 2015 Coquet by Mestres, the maestros who are changing many people’s tainted perceptions of what Cava can be, is on at a heavily discounted offer price for the month of September!

As I’m sure most of you will be aware by now, there aren’t many wine producers on earth, or family businesses of any genre for that matter, that can claim that over 29 generations of the same family have been involved in the building of the business, but Mestres can! The Mestres family have been winegrowers in Penedes since 1312, and produced the very first Champagne method sparkling wine in Spain, over a century ago, in 1928. So, it goes without saying that the family at Mestres have had ample to time to hone and perfect their craft and in complete contrast to the insipidly neutral qualities of the mass-produced Cava that has flooded the markets over the last decades, the Gran Reserva wines of Mestres offer truly amazing vinous complexity.

Their 2015 Coquet is a beautiful Gran Reserva Cava with 42 months of ageing on its lees and over 3 extra years in bottle. It is crafted using an even mix of Parellada, Xarel·lo and Macabeo, with an average vine age of over 50 years. With the yields kept very low this results in rich and highly concentrated grapes. It is straw yellow, clear and bright and the primary aromas of white fruit (white peach and pear) and flowers burst from the glass. On the palate, gorgeous ripe citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit, orange peel) come through alongside creamy notes of fine pastries and roasted almonds. The moose is harmoniously integrated, persistent and fine: matching and amplifying the smoothness and creaminess on the palate, harmoniously balanced against the zest of the mature fruit. It also has an incredibly refined mineral line with a lively acidic lift to maintain freshness. Over the past few years, the wine has matured wonderfully, maintaining its life and energy, whilst becoming smoother, rounder and more elegant on the palate. The finish is remarkably long, with the positive flavours remaining pronounced long after the glass is finished! It is also a multifaceted and versatile wine which allows it to be paired with virtually any dish one desires!

It is the quality of the base wine, and this extended ageing, which gives the wines from Mestres such extraordinary complexity, minerality and depth. The quality of these Gran Reserva Cavas is comparable to, and often surpasses, many of the greatest sparkling wines anywhere on the planet today. If you love great sparkling wine and have never experienced these wines, then the 2015 Coquet is the ideal gateway into the world of Mestres. Whether you are well acquainted or not with these stunning wines, don’t miss out on ‘Mestres Month’, and their beautifully matured 2015 Coquet!
