The Beguiling Bourgognes of Moissenet Bonnard

We are excited to take a brief foray back to one of the most prestigious & ancient regions in winemaking, and the birthplace of ‘terroir’ focused vinification: Burgundy. Here we visit an incredibly versatile winemaker, and one of our favourite domaines in the region: Jean-Louis of Domaine Moissenet Bonnard. We hope that today’s mixed case will act as the perfect introduction and gateway into the breathtaking Burgundies of this remarkable estate.

Domaine Moissenet Bonnard is now into its 9th generation, and is run today by Jean-Louis (who inherited the domaine from his grandfather in 1988) and his daughter Emmanuelle-Sophie.

After taking over, Jean Louis invested greatly in improving the conditions in the vineyards, bottling the domaines wines (which the family had not previously done) and increasing the domaines holdings. Today the estate is comprised of 5.5ha, across 20 plots, spread over 5 different Burgundy appellations, including Pommard, Beaune, Meursault & Puligny Montrachet. Certainly not ones to rest on their laurels, they produce a total of nine different red wines, four white wines and a Crémant de Bourgogne. Jean-Louis’ ability to understand what each individual plot under his watch needs, and his ability to adapt to the conditions of each vintage allows him to consistently craft harmoniously balanced wines, filled with character and puissance, year in year out.

Jean-Louis’ vision has always been to practise what his parents, grandmother, and great-grandmother had taught him: utilising organic and sustainable methods to ensure biodiversity and a healthy and vibrant ecosystem in the vineyards. For Jean-Louis everything is about nature, listening to it, and allowing it to set the pace and rhythm of everything, as he likes to put it, “Taking care of nature like you would an old lady”. The quest for the purest expression of their superb terroir as possible continues in the cellar. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeast and at bottling minimal sulphur is used, in order to preserve the life and energy of the wine.

Today, Emmanuelle-Sophie and her father Jean-Louis work side by side. Emmanuelle-Sophie has the same fire, and is driven by the same passion for their land & vines as her father. She is preparing to continue and develop the estate and thus write a new chapter in family history. We certainly can’t wait to see what she brings to the already formidable family legacy.

Our ‘Beguiling Bourgognes of Moissenet Bonnard’ contains Jean-Louis’ Bourgogne Rouge and Blanc, and we think will act as the perfect introduction to the domaines style. However, this is simply a stepping off point, we hope this will leave you excited, and thirsty to explore more of one of the most varied and impressive ranges in Bourgogne.
