The Classy Côtes du Rhônes of Château Pegau

As many of you will know, we at Gauntleys have had the honour of working with the wonderful team at the historic and illustrious Domaine du Pegau, for close to 40 years. Since our wine-importing inception we have remained fervent proponents and admirers of Pegau’s uncompromising traditional wine-making style. Run by the tenacious and driven Laurence Feraud, the Domaine is widely regarded as one of the finest producers and biggest names in the region. With today’s ‘Château Pegau’ special offer mixed case, we would like to showcase a selection of the latest offerings from Château du Pegau: a separate branch of the Domaine, run by Laurence, which specialises in Côtes du Rhônes and CDR Villages.

Back in 2012, Laurence purchased a 41-hectare estate belonging to an old dilapidated Provençal farmhouse, located in Sourgues on the banks of the Rhône, a mere 4 miles south-east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The proximity meant that the terroir was very similar to that of Chateauneuf: sandy soils with large rounded pebbles (Galets Roulés). They named the estate Château Pegau, and thus began a real passion project for Laurence, who is always looking for new and exciting challenges. She saw amazing potential in the terroir here to craft fantastic Côtes du Rhône and CDR Villages, that would rise above much of the market, and offer people the opportunity to delight in Pegau’s wines at a more, for many, approachable price. The wines truly deliver, capturing the essence of Pegau’s eminent style and quality, whilst being loaded with classic Côtes du Rhône fruit and spice, and offering great value for money and approachability in their youth.

Whether you are already familiar with the wines of Pegau or not, if you are a fan of great Côtes du Rhône, don’t miss out on these esteemed offerings from Laurence Feraud.

Gauntleys Mixed Wine Cases The Classy Côtes du Rhônes of Château Pegau - Six-Bottle Special Offer Mixed Case

This special offer mixed case contains 2x each of the following wines from Chateau Pegau:

NV Plan Pegau (years of blend 2020, 2019 and 2018)

Moving away from the classic Southern Rhone GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre) mix, with this cuvée Laurence opted to go for something a little different. The Plan Pegau is a mix of 30% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot, and the 20% balance a mix of old-vines Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Danlas, Alicante and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also a reserve blend of 3 different vintages: 2015, 16 and 17. Laurence wanted to create a cuvée that reflects the hallmark personality and style of Pégau, whilst also being an approachable VDF for everyday wine buyers. The result is rich, meaty red, which captures the essence of the Southern Rhône Valley, with layers of red and dark fruit character, soft supple tannins from the merlot, and complex spice notes from extended aging in small oak barrels. It offers a true and loud echo of the traditional Pegau style and profile, and is the “little brother” of the Domaine du Pegau Cuvée Réservée Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Enjoy with game, hearty stews, and grilled meats.

2022 Côtes du Rhône Blanc ‘La Lône’

Made from Clairette 40%, Bourboulenc 30%, Grenache blanc 20%, Ugni Blanc 10%, this is a refreshing and refined, white CDR. Clean and fresh on the nose with nectarine stone fruit and white flowers and an endearing scent of honey suckle. Lovely clean palate, delivering fresh acidity, good vibrancy, harmoniously balanced and beautiful long finish. Perfect to be drunk right now.

2020 Côtes du Rhône Rouge ‘Maclura’

This is a Charming and characterful Cotes du Rhone Rouge, from deep loamy soils mainly covered in Chateauneuf style round pebbles (Galets Roulés), which captures the essence of the garrigue. A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone Cuvée Maclura is a dark-fruited wine loaded with pure blackcurrents and raspberries and backed up with notes of black pepper, black alives and expresso. Sturdy and savory in character, it's medium to full-bodied, admirably concentrated and intense, with an elegant and supple mouthfeel, and well-balanced juicy tannins. Clean and long on the finish. It’s in its prime for drinking right now and will go perfectly with grilled or roasted red meats and dried meats. Serve at around 17°C.
