Why Not?

Although overall it has been a slightly underwhelming summer season this year, with Helios often on vacation and Zeus happily expressing himself, we have had several glorious periods. And despite the weather not seeming to be able to make its mind up these days, there does appear (fingers crossed) to be a stretch of sun and warmth on the horizon, for this coming week at least. So, as we potentially approach the last rays of summer, we have a beautiful little red in mind to help you make the most of the good weather to come.

We have very recently re-tasted Grand Nicolet’s 2021 Côtes du Rhone ‘Le Pourquoi Pas’ and just had to spread the joy. As I’m sure you are aware, Jean Pierre’s domaine is one of the founding cellars in Rasteau, and we have recently started importing their wonderfully pure and vibrant Cotes du Rhone and Rasteau wines. His organically produced AOC and non-AOC wines are absolutely delicious, always deep and rich whilst never veering into being over extracted and big for the sake of it, characterised first, by their purity, perfume and harmonious balance.

Absolutely singing at the moment Jean Pierre’s 2021 ‘Le Pourqoui Pas’ is a natural Côtes du Rhône wine, made with zero sulphur. Produced from a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan, this is an irresistible Côtes du Rhône! The nose is tantalizingly fragrant, and there is a pronounced life, vibrancy and energy to the fruit. Although similar in the fruit profile to the domaine’s regular Côtes du Rhône, showcasing the same depth of delicious Southern Rhône’ black berry fruits, there are a few more forward notes of sweet raspberries and morello cherries here too. On the back cassis, and some gentle spicy notes come through as well as a delightful twang of white pepper. The clay and limestone soils impart a lovely minerality here, together with a vibrant acidity that keeps this cuvée delightfully fresh and elegant. Medium to full bodied, the palate is silky and refined with wonderfully, pure, juicy, ripe fruit, with a little more life and energy than the regular Côtes du Rhône. This is just delicious.

Why not bid farewell to our British ‘summer’ in style, and welcome in the Autumnal palate with a pretty glass of ‘Pourquoi Pas’.
