Domaine Barmes-Buecher
Wettolsheim, Alsace
Francois Barmes who runs this young domaine is another vigneron who is dedicated to producing 'vins de terroir'. He is a real perfectionist and practices biodynamic viticulture. The extensive range includes several lieux dits and Grand Crus in each grape variety. The lieux dits include Rosenberg, Herrenweg, Wintzenheim, Leimenthal and Kruett, their Grand Crus vineyards are on Hengst, Steingruber and Pfersigberg. The Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris lean towards opulence but retain a brilliant balance. The Grand Cru Rieslings are dry and racy with stunning length and delineation.
I always find the Clos Sand particularly appealing with a real mineral complexity. In reality all the Rieslings are superb and the Grand Cru offer great longevity. The more concentrated Grand Cru, Steingrubler and Hengst, are simply stunning. The sensational Gewurztraminer Hengst is really exoitc yet possesses a fabulous balance and finesse.
The Pinot Gris Fleck is consistently a favourite of mine, as is the superb Cremant. The poise and purity of this zero dosage sparkler, make it an ideal aperitif and a truly stylish alternative to Champagne
