Domaine Francis Jourdain
Although Valencay was only granted full AC status in 2003, the Jourdain family have worked the land here for several hundred years. Today the domaine comprises some 20 hectares of vines in Valencay and Touraine, run today by Sophie and Francis Jourdain.
The Jourdain’s work their vineyards by lutte raisonee, placing great importance on retaining a good balance in the vineyard. Grass is grown between rows in the vineyards to control the vines’ vigour and when necessary they carry out pruning, de-budding, green harvesting and general thinning of the vines to control yields and ripeness. Any treatments are only given to the vines as and when necessary.
Their vineyards in Valencay are on two separate areas. Within the first area are two soil types, firstly the Perruches, which is a hot stony soil, perfect for late ripeneing varieties such as Cot, Cabernet, Sauvignon Rose and Cardonnay. The other terroir here is called Aubuis, a free draining limestone soil which brings out the finesse and fruit of the Pinot Noir. The second area has flinty clay soils on gentle slopes and here the Gamay, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc perform best.
The wines are vinfied and matured with the same dedication as shown in the vineyards, to ensure that the great balance achieved in the grapes is transmitted fully into the wines, together with a perfect reflection of terroir.
