There's Always Time for Sweet Caroline
Despite a valiant effort and a quite remarkable run, unfortunately we didn’t come out with the result we all wanted last weekend at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. However, the girls can leave with their heads held high, knowing that their nation is incredibly proud of what they achieved, and the way they carried themselves throughout the tournament! The 2019 Gewurtraminer ‘Cuvée Caroline’ from Domaine Schoffit is an absolute showstopper. A gleaming bright gold in the glass, this is a classic, mineral, expressive and unctuous Gewurztraminer, from the old vines of the ‘Harth’ Lieu-Dit, near Colmar. It has a fabulous concentration on the nose and palate, with endearing scents of rose and Turkish Delight shining through on the nose. The palate is delightfully ‘gourmand’, with enticing hints of Turkish Delight again, combined with lychee, orange pith, tea, ginger, and even Christmas pudding. As usual for the variety, the residual is 25 g/l here, but the balance is absolutley perfect. It never falls in the realm of cloying, or heavy, as lesser expressions of this variety so often do. With a fantastic mineral line and vibrant acidity, there is a wonderful levity, finesse and buoyancy to go alongside the dense and unctuously ripe fruit on the palate. With great focus, a lovely, clean and fresh finish, this is one of those wines where you will never want the glass to be empty.
