Different Shades of White

As we have said many times before, one of the most enjoyable aspects of our role as wine merchants, and what continues to drive us forward, is the pursuit and subsequent discovery of the new. The understanding that there are always more incredible gems to be uncovered, inspiring individuals to be met and future favourite’s waiting to be tasted. This knowledge helps keep us motivated, keeps us searching.

We all have, and love, our tried and tested assortment of firm favourites: wines we trust and wines we look forward to revisiting again and again. However, there’s no feeling quite like the first time you taste a new wine and find that it is something special. It truly feels like a moment of discovery. Like finding a diamond in the rough.

Today we want to embark on a journey of discovery. A few weeks ago, we aimed to help broaden your white wine horizons a little, with a quick visit to the beautiful Pfalz valley, Germany. With this week’s special offer mixed case, we are taking things to the next level. If that was the warm up act, now it’s time for the main event.

Today we celebrate the wonders of white wine, with our 'Different Shades of White' Discovery Case. It is a selection of 6 beautiful bottles, the majority of which are single varietals from indigenous grape varieties. Some of these are rarely seen in the UK market and little-known outside of their native land. It is almost guaranteed that you will come across at least one white grape variety that you have not encountered before in this mixed case.

We begin our road trip in Central Italy, north of the Abruzzo, nestled in the rolling hills behind the walled city of Ascoli Piceno, with our one and only blend: The ‘Falerio’. It is a delightfully zesty Italian mix of Trebbiano, Pecorino, Passerina and Fiano, and is almost too good to be true when one looks at the price. After this we head 400 miles North, to visit the sharp peaks of the Dolomites, at the very north-east corner of Italy, boarding Slovenia. There we find two gorgeously aromatic and expressive native single varietal wines, from the newest stars to grace our portfolio: the stunning ‘Ribolla Gialla’ and ‘Friulano’ from Vini Grill Iole. After quenching our thirst here, we hop the border into Slovenia, to be graced by the unique and hypnotically exotic, floral and mineral varieties of ‘Pinela’ and ‘Zelen’, seen nowhere else in the world. We then conclude our travels 500 miles east, in the historic region of Tokaji, Hungary, where a true maverick is on a mission to change the world’s perception, of just what can be done with ‘Furmint’.
